Life Coaching

Mentoring programs give us each a chance to contribute to the youth in our community. Many of you may already participate in mentoring activities, whereas others (like me) are ready to take this next step through the Good Life Foundation’s Life Coaching Program. I hope you will join me.

What does a Life Coach do?

A life coach provides support to a young person who can benefit from the guidance, friendship and life experience of a mentor, while putting together a personal plan for success. In the Good Life Foundation Life Coaching Program, our focus will be on “at-risk” youth, ages 13-24 in our communities whose lives can be enriched through the guidance of an older, more experienced person.

How does mentoring help?

In addition to making children more confident in their schoolwork and more trusting of their parents or guardians, mentoring makes youth:

  • 52% less likely to skip school;
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs;
  • 37% less likely to skip a class;
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol; and
  • 33% less likely to commit violence.

Who can participate?

This opportunity is available to all men and women, ages 25-40, whom are not involved in any criminal activity and are headed on a promising path, whether its school, a career or an entrepreneurship.

How do I participate?

The first step is to fill out a brief mentor application. Applications are available and can be downloaded here: Life Coaching Application. The application process includes a background check, followed by a training session. Prior history of juvenile justice or interaction with legal system does not necessarily preclude you from participating. We ask that you are open and honest about your history.  Following training, each participant is matched with a youth in the program. The Good Life will provide ongoing programs to support you in this important role. This is a year long commitment.  We are working with the Onondaga County Juvenile Justice Department and the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), who will be supporting us every step of the way.

This can be a very rewarding relationship for both the life coach and mentee, but it requires commitment and consistency to be successful. I hope you will join me in accepting the challenge to make a difference.
